For The Costal Post
Rae Red (they them) is a performance artist working in Baltimore, MD. Their performances are dreamy, red filled spaces, full of humor, joyful queerness, and gender fuckery that explore the universality of the human experience. They have presented works across the United States in a wide variety of venues. I first found their work through promotional materials for their performance Red is Real, and knew that I wanted to know more about their work as soon as I saw it. Their performances are lively, joyful, and humorous spaces to contemplate the big bad things in our lives and the forces and experiences that connect us all.
After returning to Baltimore from a stint at the prestigious MacDowell Residency in New Hampshire, Rae kindly invited me into their home studio to chat about their practice, the color red, and the queer relatives we wish we had. I’m so happy I got the chance to learn more about their world and their practice, and hope you enjoy doing the same.
